PAUL MAAR

Paul Maar was born in Schweinfurt in 1937. He studied painting and art history, and for a long time worked with children as an art teacher on various film and theatre projects. Today he lives in Bamberg as a freelance author and illustrator who has won many awards.

“Paul Maar is one of the most frequently performed playwrights for children and young people. His still extremely popular play ‘Kikerikiste’ (1973) created a new style by using theatrical means to narrate a parable while at the same time emphasizing its theatricality. While his children’s books have been created at his writing-desk, with children’s theatre his inspiration has continually come from the process of rehearsing.” Extract from the jury’s citation on the award of the Assitej Prize in 2007.
